MediBeacon^™ Presents “Partnering to Improve Kidney Health”

(KANSAS CITY, KS, March 10, 2014) – The 5th Annual One Health Summit was held at Sporting Park in Kansas City on March 5-6. The event featured an agenda focused on providing a deeper understanding of One Health & how emerging technologies impact people, animals, and our environment. Terence Stern, Vice President Business Development of MediBeacon presented the Optical Renal Function Monitor (ORFM) system and discussed the potential implications of understanding actual measured kidney function in real-time and at the point-of-care.

The MediBeacon technology represents a sharp contrast to the current clinical techniques, which rely upon the use of endogenous biomarkers to calculate estimates of kidney function. The MediBeacon ORFM would provide healthcare professionals access to a clinically practical method to obtain direct measurements of kidney function or a measured Glomerular Filtration Rate (mGFR). Improved ability to measure kidney function has the promise to transform the understanding of key areas of human and animal physiology.

Mr. Stern discussed the potential relevance of mGFR; in the acute care hospital setting, in dosing potentially nephrotoxic drugs, in the assessment of Chronic Kidney Disease, and as a diagnostic in Companion Animal Health.

The 2014 Summit provided professionals in the pharmaceutical and bioscience industry a venue to strengthen their One Health knowledge base and explore new collaborative opportunities. Subject matter experts from bioscience industry companies and research enterprises shared best practices and led discussions about current issues.
