Does the Preclinical MX system work in pigmented animals?

Yes. Since melanin absorbs large amounts of blue and green light, the overall signal measured by the Preclinical MX monitor will be lower. However, as reflecting excitation light, skin auto fluorescence, and scatter light from the outside is also absorbed, the background signal drops at the same time. Therefore, the background to peak ratio stays the same. Moreover, as the reflections and scatter are the reason for movement artifacts in the datasets, the measurements get much smoother when measuring on dark skin. For that reason, measurement quality in pigmented animal skin is generally even better with respect to the signal to noise ratio.
